Rajasthani Miniature Paintings

The Mughals brought the art of Miniature painting to India from Persia. The Persian artists who came with the Mughals, trained the Indian artists. The Indian artists, after learning the crafts, added their own new distinctive style in the artform. Their paintings were inspired by the royals and romantic lives of the Mughals. Subsequently, the miniature paintings produced by Indian artists gained fame as Rajasthani miniature.

It requires utmost care and minute detailing in making these paintings. The colors are made from Minerals and vegetables, precious stones, as well as pure silver and gold. The preparing and mixing of color is an elaborate process. The brushes used need to be very fine. And even now, hair of squirrels is used to make the brushes.

Traditionally, the paintings are aristocratic, individualistic, and strong in portraiture. They depict plush court scenes and hunting expeditions of royalty. Images of Flowers and animals are also recurrent in the paintings.
