Our collection of Pattachitra Paintings are Genuine, Handmade and are in the traditional artform of Odisha. Moreover, the paintings are by Mr. Bijay Kumar Mohapatra who is National Merit Award winner.

Mr. Bijay is a very renowned and award winner painter from Odisha. Consequently, many well known galleries have exhibited his paintings. Bijay has also won many awards in recognition of his contribution to this artform. Among other awards, Rajiv Gandhi Forum has awarded him with the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana. 

Now, Bijay runs an Institution in Orissa where he trains young children this art. He wants to keep this artform alive through this institute. Eventually, he wants to open an art village in his home town for connoisseurs to visit and appreciate the process of making these paintings.

Recent Trends

Off late, lot of traders have started selling digital prints of the paintings. Though these digital copies are cheaper to buy, however they deal a death blow to the traditional artform.

The traditional Genuine Handmade Pattachitra Painting from Odisha are time consuming and involve high skill sets and craftmanship. Firstly, it takes almost five days in making the making the canvas for the painting, the ‘patta’, ready. In addition, the painter needs to put in considerable effort in Preparing the brush and natural colors. Consequently, the price of a genuine handmade pattachitra painting is much more.

Iliziencraft’s endeavor is to provide a genuine platform to the artisans to showcase their handmade paintings to connoisseurs. This will help them get a better price for their work and consequently will help the artform survive through these troubled times.

We will ensure that the proceeds from sale of these painting will go towards running an institution that our master craftsman wants to create at his native place. This will help artisans to find a better source of living and more importantly keeping this beautiful traditional art from Orissa alive.

The base for the PattaChitra is created using threads from an old saree that is then mixed with chalk, tamarind seeds and a gum like resin from the bark of a local tree. After the drying process the base of the PattaChitra is ready to be painted upon.

The colors used are also 100% natural. The colours are extracted from rocks, lamp black, Indigo, Conch Shells and so on. The natural gum of a fruit called ‘kaitha’ is mixed with the colors along with water to ensure the colors stay fast.

The usual PattaChitra paintings lasts at least a 100 years!

Pattachitra Paintings Odisha

Pattachitra is one of the oldest and most popular styles of painting in Odisha and West Bengal. As per popular belief, Pattachitra artform originated as early as the 12th century.

The name Pattachitra has evolved from the Sanskrit word ‘patta’, meaning cloth, and ‘chitra’, meaning picture. Thus, Pattachitra is a painting done on canvas. The Paintings have rich colorful application and creative motifs and designs. The artform is known for its intricate details, mythological narratives and the folktales inscribed in it.
